Carlby is the alternative pop project of Wisconsin-based artist, Carl Lodoen. While officially a solo endeavor, the Carlby sound is heavily defined by Carl’s decade-long creative partnership with artist and producer, Dylan “Horosha” Harris. Since the project’s formation in 2019, the longtime friends have refined their dynamic, drawing from emo rock, post-hardcore, modern hip-hop, and pop to create a sound that’s both nostalgic and innovative.

Carlby’s signature sound—showcased on tracks like “Friends & Cigarettes” and “Class of ‘68”—is characterized by intricate Midwest emo guitar riffs backed by a mix of tight hip-hop percussion and dynamic rock drums. Carlby’s smooth vocals and catchy melodies are frequently layered with Horosha’s precise harmonies or contrasted against harsh, screamed vocals. Never afraid to experiment, Carlby has explored multiple genres, from country, to pop-punk, and metal.

Listeners have taken notice of this genre-fluid approach. Music critic Emma Blaire notes, “The way Carlby seamlessly blends emo, pop, hip-hop, and other genres showcases their artistic talent and willingness to explore new boundaries.” Similarly, reviewer melmige praised their album Midwest Vignettes for its "glossy pop-rock sound that has been meticulously crafted and condensed into only the best and most pristine elements."

Rooted in the underground music scenes of SoundCloud and X, Carlby has established a strong base of listeners and collaborators. After picking up traction with 2021’s “Not Worth Saving,” the breakout single “I Meant It When I Said ‘Til Death, so Let Me Rest in Peace” pushed the project to new heights, accumulating over 150,000 streams. Today, Carlby boasts nearly 2 million online streams across platforms.

Following the release of their August 2023 debut full-length, Midwest Vignettes, Carlby and Horosha kicked off 2026 with the EP I Wouldn’t Wish This on You, accompanied by a two-part music video. The duo is currently working on an upcoming B-sides EP and performing live across the Wisconsin and Minnesota area, utilizing live-looping and backing tracks to deliver an engaging, high-energy show.
